My name is Kevin Schohl and I read "And the world closed its doors." I enjoyed reading this book since it was about my family history, and it gave me a clear picture on how part of my family came to America. I liked the book at a family stand point, but if I would read it and not be related to the main character I would be bored of reading the book. The book was action packed for being a bio, but I prefer to read fiction rather than reality. My brother was the one who gave me this book, also read the book. He was a lot more happier to have read it than I was (since he was the one who bought it).
This book is about Max Schohl and what he did to change his life and the life of others. He had fought in world war one as a Jewish solider. During the Holocaust he would face some difficult situations and would have to decide to stay in Germany or go somewhere else. He married Käthe Schohl who was a nurse that helped Max during the war. He had some family trouble when he married her because of his religion. He also had success and trouble with running a business.. At this time Germany didn't associate Jews as being Germany this made it harder for Max to run a business, and be in the army. Max had to flee the country because him and his family were at danger for having the Jewish faith.
This book was one of the biggest books I read but it gave details on how Max lived, who his friends were, when why and where people went. It showed notes that were made by which relative. It even showed a letters that Max and other German Jews wrote during the war. He had made a living from building a chemical factory. He was the wealthy man in town, and he even got to go skiing in Switzerland every year. He learned that even though he was a retired officer he was not speared since his factory burned down due to his Jewish background. He than realized he was a 2nd class citizen. Max had some difficult situations to deal with but he made it by with help from Julius Hess who you will see helped Max make it out of the country.
Max spoke several languages thats how he could travel places like Switzerland. This was a great Holocaust piece of literature. This book can be confusing at times since it gives a lot of Nazi party names Sozialdemokratische Partei Deutschlands, Sturmabteilung, kyffhäuserbund. Max faced a lot of hard situations in this book, and that is one of the main reasons I enjoyed it. This was at some points hard to follow but given the fact that it was enjoyable i would recommend this. But if you have no connection with the character i wouldn't suggest that you should read this book.
